Bury Hospice

Building A New Hospice For Bury

Bury Hospice is a highly-regarded and well-loved organisation. The care it provides is without exception of the highest standard and is utterly compassionate. However, its inpatient unit of 5 beds is currently the smallest inpatient unit in the United Kingdom. Whilst elsewhere in the borough there are other ad-hoc provisions (a part-time consultant sees Hospital-based patients and there is occasional use of beds in the local Community Hospital), Bury Hospice's beds represent the only inpatient beds dedicated to palliative care in the borough of Bury.

Physical constraints of the existing building can also make it difficult to admit patients who need specialist equipment such as large wheelchairs, and there have unfortunately been occasions when the hospice has not been able to admit a patient for in-patient care.

Further expansion on our existing Hospice site is not possible and therefore the Trustees have recognised that further development will require a move to a new building in a new location.

In response to the above needs, and to the inability to increase capacity on the existing site, Building a new Hospice for the people of Bury would enable Bury Hospice:

1. To be able to provide the care and compassion currently offered by Bury Hospice to a larger number of people, with cancer and non-malignant diagnoses and in a more spacious and high-specification buildings set in a natural and landscaped setting.

2. To develop and diversify the range of services offered to meet the needs of all people affected by terminal illness, whether as patients themselves or as family members.

A Capital Appeal was launched in late 2010 to raise the £5 million needed to build equip and open a new Bigger Better Hospice for the people of Bury.
