High school students are urged to get spooky and conjure up some memorable verse for Halloween.

The winning poem in the Black Cat Poetry Competition will be read out during the Whitefield Halloween Fest on 30/31 October.

Your poem should be related to Halloween and be no longer than 200 words.

To download an entry form, go to www.bury.gov.uk/whitefield

Entries should be sent to Ruth Shedwick, Town Centres Team, Freepost RSHH-BGXC-LSSK, Environment and Development Services, Planning and Transportation Policy, 3 Knowsley Place, Duke Street, Bury BL9 0EJ. Alternatively, email them to r.shedwick@bury.gov.uk

Deadline for entries is 10 October, and the two best entries will win a book voucher.

This is just one of many events held at the Whitefield festival (30/31 October) in Hamilton Road park, organised by Bury Council’s town centres team in partnership with Whitefield Business Group.

Events include a lantern parade, ghoulish tales and pumpkin carving, monster masks and a 12 ft animatronic dragon, not to mention bats, falconry, archery, tarot, and a hog roast, plus a variety of stalls selling Fairtrade products/clothing and Halloween paraphernalia.

There’s also a Halloween quiz and a screening of a classic horror film in The White Room (opposite the park) on Sunday 30 Oct from 8pm.
