New Whitefield guide puts town on the map

Date published: 08 June 2011

The many attractions in Whitefield have been pulled together in a new visitor’s guide to the town.

The colour guides are packed with details of where to shop, eat, drink and stay, and come with a handy map of the town, a brief history, and useful contact details and travel information.

Community events are also publicised, such as ranger-led walks around local parks, the Boz Park Family Fun Day in July and the Hollins Vale Go Wild Day in September.

The guides are being distributed to households across Whitefield and surrounding areas, and are also available at local shops.

Funding for the guide has come from Whitefield and Unsworth Local Area Partnership, and the council’s town centres team has put the guide together on behalf of Whitefield Business Group.

Councillor Joan Grimshaw, who chaired Whitefield Local Area Partnership, said: "A grant was awarded to Whitefield Business Group to produce a visitor’s guide for Whitefield. I hope that local residents and visitors will be pleased to see the variety of shops, hostelries and leisure attractions Whitefield has right on our doorstep. This is our jewel in the crown to be proud of. Get your Visit Whitefield guide to see it!"

Alex Stacey, chair of Whitefield Business Group, said: “The Whitefield Business Group is extremely proud to be involved in helping to produce the Visit Whitefield Guide. We are very lucky to have such a wide range of unique and independent shops and services in Whitefield and it is the duty of the Business Group to support them and encourage more people to use them.

“The Visit Whitefield Guide will hopefully remind local people what fantastic assets they have on their doorstep and enthuse them to utilise them more often. The guide will hopefully persuade visitors to venture out and spend their money supporting our local businesses.

“This guide could not have happened without the support and finance of other people and I would like to thank Cllr Grimshaw and the Local Area Partnership Group for providing funding and thank Ruth Shedwick, Liz Gillan and Carran O’Grady for all their hard work putting this together.”

* Help spread the message while you’re out shopping – special Love Whitefield bags for life are also available from local retailers.
