Discover the secrets of your industrial heritage
Date published: 02 May 2011
The industrial heritage of Tottington Mill and the Kirklees Valley will be revealed during two open days for the public.
Residents can meet archaeologists on the site and learn about the mill’s secrets between noon and 4pm on Friday 20 May and Saturday 21 May.
In 1841, Joshua Knowles's Tottington Mill employed more than 400 people, but today its remains are part of the Kirklees Valley local nature reserve.
Oxford Archaeology (North) has been employed by the Environment Agency and Bury Council to undertake a survey of the remains of the former mill site as part of an assessment as to whether the brook should be de-culverted. A number of features can still be seen including stone dye vats, engine beds and the culvert that took water under the mill floor.
