Residents in Tottington got together this morning (Saturday 2 October 2010) to clean up a path they all know and love.
Men, women and children, spent their Saturday morning picking up litter along the Kirklees Trail, off Laurel Street.
The trail is used by many for walking, running and bike riding but is continually blighted by litter.
The community clean up was organised by Anna Cocker from Bury Ranger Service, she said: “We have got about nine people here all spread out, it is a community event and we have provided gloves and litter pickers and we have got a skip for the rubbish to go in at the end.”
Ms Cocker explained that by having the community take part in the clean up more people would begin to respect the area and look after it more.
Participant Gill Parry regularly uses the path for running, she said: “I run up and down here a lot and the last thing I want is to see it being spoilt so it is nice to take part and be involved and appreciate the end result.”
David Steadman took part with his 8-year-old granddaughter Holy Simpson, 6, he said: “It has been a great morning and with the sun shine shining through the leaves it is a nice day out.
“We use it a lot so it is nice to get involved with local community work.”
Ms Cocker added: “It has gone really well today, much better than I expected especially after yesterday’s weather, my thanks go to everyone who has taken part – their help is very much appreciated.”

Have Your Say

The trail seemed much cleaner than I have seen it in the past, particularly behind Tottington High School, but we still found plenty of litter. Perhaps most distressing were signs that some, just a few, neighbouring houses still think such a beautiful natural trail, now a nature reserve, is an ideal place to dump rubish or to leave old broken fencing, including barbed wire!
