New gas main brings traffic chaos
Date published: 23 August 2010
Gas works are causing traffic chaos for motorists around Bury Bridge, taking in Bolton Street, Tottington Road and Wood Street, one of Bury’s busiest junctions.
National Grid is renewing gas mains and the £360,000 project which started in April is expected to be completed in three to four weeks.
Lane closures are causing long traffic queues to build up and there are fears that the roads will become even more congested when children return to school after the summer break.
National Grid say contractors are working in the evenings, and sometimes throughout the night and every other weekend, to install the new gas pipes.
Only one lane of each carriageway can be closed during the day, but two or three lanes can be closed at night.
A spokesman said: “We fully appreciate the work is a disruption but we do ask people to bear with us.
“Replacing the gas pipes is essential work. When this new main is laid, it will last for 80 years.”
