Date published: 19 June 2010
Bury College students who are part of the band For The Weekend, performed at Bury Carnival’s gala last weekend and received a great reception from the crowd.
The local band are currently aiming high performing at a variety of events and venues in the Bury and Greater Manchester area, playing music inspired by the indie rock scene. Encouraged by the success of The Courteeners, who originate from Middleton, and Manchester band Oasis, For The Weekend are aiming to add to the success of bands from the local area. Building their reputation by playing renowned venues such as The Manchester Academy and supporting bands such as the Clone Roses, For The Weekend are building a strong fan base.
The band consists of three Bury College students, Tom Gorton (drums, age 17, from Radcliff, studying BTEC National Diploma in Music), James Cordeiro (bass, age17, from Radcliffe, studying BTEC National Diploma in Music), Liam Smith (guitar, age 18, from Prestwich, studying BTEC National Diploma in Multimedia) and Jake Bird (vocal and guitar, age 18, from Tottington) who is studying Maths, Further Maths and Physics at Holy Cross.
Speaking about Bury Carnival, James Cordeiro said, “It was a really great opportunity to play at the carnival. The reaction we received was great.”
For The Weekend are planning a summer of gigs, including Moho in Manchester’s Northern Quarter, the City’s place for new and up and coming talent, on the 20 July where they will be supporting Room 94.
