Band fundraiser in support of Help for Heroes
Date published: 16 June 2010
On Sunday, June 6, D-Day, we held a charity fundraiser in support of Help for Heroes (H4H).
H4H, which has no political affiliations, supports our armed services personnel injured and disabled in Afghanistan and Iraq, and of course, their families.
This care and support is not just for the now, but for as long as they need it. Let’s face it, a lost limb stays lost!
The politics of our troops being there is irrelevant, the fact is, they are there and many suffer the most grievous of injuries.
Indeed one of the members of Tottington Band has a son who has lost a leg in an IED explosion in Afghanistan, ironically when he was trying to help another solder similarly injured.
For this he receives the George Cross Medal (and a prosthetic limb for the rest of his life). This ‘war’ touches us all in some way, and it certainly touched the hearts of many, who gave so generously.
The event on June 6 was a concert by Tottington Public Band at Tottington Conservative Club, in Royds Street in Tottington, and was supported by collections, a grand raffle and we even had two people run in the BUPA Manchester run.
Many local and even national companies supported us by sponsorship, so that all money raised would go directly to Help for Heroes.
Both the band and the club facilities were donated and my thanks go to all these groups and individuals who dug deep to support this cause. I will not list them, for fear of missing someone, but they are recognised in our event programme, a copy of which can be made available to anyone who wants one. They are clearly companies who deserve our custom and will certainly have mine from now on.
To date, we have raised £2,500, and this may yet grow a little, as our Just Giving account is still active. Your readers will be able to donate via this account until the end of the month.
