Silver surfers get on board

Date published: 26 May 2010

The borough’s “silver surfers” have been overcoming their fear of the Internet and developing their computer skills.

They attended free drop-in sessions organised by Bury library service to celebrate the ninth annual Silver Surfers Day, which coincided with Adult Learners Week.

An estimated 9.2 million people over 55 are without an Internet connection, meaning that this age group could be missing out more than any other. One of the main complaints from older people is about losing independence, and the Internet can be an important way to prevent this.

Visitors to the sessions had a chance to win a laptop through UKonline, and were given refreshments and an advice pack.

Bury libraries have regular and informal Get You Started and Internet taster sessions.

The library service also provides learning in a formal or informal setting. Residents can choose to get qualifications through Bury Adult Learning Centre or learn at their own pace, perhaps at Bury Learning Libraries based at Tottington or Prestwich.
