Another packed week of festival fun

Date published: 25 May 2010

Opera, a brass band and a horse parade are just three of the events in the third week of the Prestwich Festival.

And organisers hope that dance, comedy, sport and food will also keep visitors flocking to town.

The week starts with a free performance by Tottington Brass Band in St Mary’s Flower Park on Sunday May 30 at 1pm.

Bank Holiday Monday brings us a “Procession of Horses” courtesy of Simister & Prestwich Bridleway Association. This starts at 11am at the Same Yet Park and goes along Simister Lane, Heywood Road, Polefield Road, St Mary’s Road, Heywood Road and back to Simister. There are likely to be traffic delays in the area, and drivers are asked to be patient.

June enters on Tuesday (June 1) with crafts, coffee and homemade cakes at Church Lane Community Centre at 10am, followed by a concert recital at St Mary’s Church at 7.30pm. This will be a musical feast with international opera singer Martin Snell and accompanied on piano by Phillip White, chorus director of the Copenhagen Royal Opera.
There is live jazz at the Church Inn, while a MaD evening co-hosted with FC United features Andrew Davies discussing his best-selling book “Gangs of Manchester” at an evening of films and drama.

On Saturday June 5, Prestwich Cricket, Tennis & Bowling Club is holding an open day and barbecue, while the Creative Living Centre is offering a family fun day. The night ends with the Gibbons Dance extravaganza at the Longfield Suite.

David Curtis, Prestwich Festival organiser, said: “If you live in Prestwich then you will certainly never be bored during the festival. We’ve got a variety of events to suit all tastes throughout the week and all the venues are local.”
