Chicken course spreads its wings

Date published: 10 October 2011

Courses on keeping chickens run at local libraries are proving so successful that another one has been organised.

The courses are for people keen on keeping chickens at home, and cover all the basic knowledge that you will need, from how to look after ex-battery hens to housing, feeding and general health concerns.

The latest course will start on 14 November at Ramsbottom Library and Adult Learning Centre. To book a place call 0161 253 5352 or email: Ramsbottom.lib@bury.gov.uk

The most recent course was at Brandlesholme Community Centre and Library, which attracted compliments from the students.

Sue Heywood, who lives in Bury, said: “I was given six chickens a short time ago and more recently a further two chicks. I wanted to know how to care for them properly so coming on this course has been really helpful.”

Jane Higginson from Brandlesholme said: “When I was growing up we had chickens and I would like my own children to have a similar experience of looking after them and collecting the eggs.”
