In the mood for wartime memories

Date published: 31 May 2011

The music of Glenn Miller got residents in the mood during afternoon tea at Ramsbottom Library and Adult Learning Centre.

The event was arranged to co-incide with the big War Weekend run by the East Lancashire Railway over the Bank Holiday.

Around 40 people attended and on producing their ration book could sample a selection of sandwiches and homemade cake. Entertainment was provided by Bill Houghton and Jim Price of Sunflower Productions Radcliffe who specialise in themed events playing dance music from the era. There was also a wartime quiz and a raffle.

This was the first time the library had organised such an event and everyone enjoyed it so much that they asked if it would be repeated. Doris Hibbert of Ramsbottom said: “I really enjoyed this event, it was an excellent and civilised afternoon and had a really good social aspect. The sandwiches and cakes were excellent and it was so gracious it took me back to my childhood.”

Other comments came from Tina Slater who said “Lovely food, staff obviously worked hard to make event a success” and from Vivien Lewis, who said “If there is the same event next year I would love to come, the music was fantastic”.

Deborah Smith, centre supervisor, said: “The idea for this event came from Lynsay, a member of our staff, but everyone worked so hard to make it such a success, especially Annette who made all the cakes.”
