Focus on Ramsbottom: Stuart Barkley

Ramsbottom is clearly a town that appeals to the artistic. Whether it’s the splendid isolation, the country breeze, the cobbled streets or the historic buildings, creative people love the place.

Stuart Barkley, 36, is the next up-and-comer in the area. He recently renovated an empty shop, turning it into an art gallery to display his work and the work of other artists, which was opened to the public on Saturday 11 and Sunday 12 December.
Musicians also brought in the crowds, including Stuart’s brother Colin and the Ukulele Punk.

“This went really well,” he said. “It was really busy, especially on Sunday when the Christmas Market was on.”

His ability to draw real-life is outstanding, with his speciality in people and animals. “They’re just what I get asked to do, but I’ll do anything.”

“I started as a toddler,” he said. “It’s always been in me.”

He studied at Macclesfield College and Mid Cheshire College. He completed his degree at the Surrey Institute of Art and Design.

Then, 15 years ago, he moved to Ramsbottom, because his family had moved nearby.
“It’s a good area to be in, with a lot of creative people. That’s what I like about it.”
He explained he works in a paper mill, but would love to make it his full time job. “I’m trying to get in the schools,” he said.

His brother Colin, 42, is a teacher of IT in Bolton 6th Form College. His girlfriend, a digital photographer, had work displayed at the gallery as well.

“I write songs and sing. We all live in the same house and there are always lots of people coming round,” he explained.

“Stuart has got better over time,” he said. “He’s very good.

“We’re hoping to try something similar in other local areas or here in Ramsbottom again.”
