Former president has his dedication to athletics remembered
Date published: 24 January 2012
Radcliffe AC's former president Terry Nortley will have his dedication to athletics remembered in stone.
Mr Nortley, who died in November aged 82, had been a coach for more than 50 years and an inspiration to many athletes.
On Monday his wife of 61 years Vera, and son Chris joined new president Tom West and his wife Joan West, chairman Mark Emmett and secretary Eileen Royle to place a plaque at the Book of Stone at the East Lancs Crematorium in Radcliffe.
The stone monument, in the shape of a book, carries such famous local names as three times world snooker champion John Spencer, who was born in the town, and 1930s Olympic athlete Nellie Halstead.
Already a mile circuit in Close Park, used to encourage people to take up exercise, has been named the Terry Nortley Mile and Radcliffe AC's first race of the season will carry his name.
