Second blooming award in weeks!
Date published: 25 October 2011
Bury has blooming done it again and won its second award in a matter of weeks.
For the eighth year in a row, Bury has won North West in Bloom in the Best Large Town category. It also received a special discretionary prize, the Commercial Award, in recognition of sponsorship and support from local businesses.
Radcliffe, competing in a separate North West in Bloom category, was awarded silver-gilt, an improvement on last year’s silver medal which the town achieved for its debut entry.
This success comes just weeks after Bury won a silver-gilt at the national RHS Britain in Bloom finals, plus the RHS Floral Award for the best and most imaginative displays in the UK.
Bury Council is praising local residents, schools, businesses and community groups for getting behind this year’s campaign and for helping to win yet another clutch of awards.
Councillor Jane Lewis, executive member for leisure, tourism and culture, said: “This is another wonderful result for Bury. To the workforce and to all our “in bloom” volunteers and participants, I’d like to say a really big “thank you”.
"I’d like to acknowledge too the important contribution made by local businesses whose generous sponsorship has benefitted our town. This year the community really came together to support Bury in bloom and help retain the high standard of horticultural displays that people have come to expect.
“Everyone’s enthusiastic involvement is to be applauded and I wish to congratulate all concerned along with Rotary Club Of Tottington And Bury West who deserve a special mention for their kind offer of funding the entry fees.”
Anyone interested in getting involved in “in bloom” in their local area or offering sponsorship should contact Bury Council on 0161 253 5266 or email parks.countryside@bury.gov.uk
