Apples Wanted!

Date published: 03 September 2011

Incredible Edible Prestwich and District is asking for your help over the next couple of months to find and harvest all the apples that usually go to waste in Prestwich and Whitefield. We need them for the first ‘Apple Day’ in Philips Park on Saturday October 22.

On Apple Day BTCV, Park Rangers and others will help us to celebrate the fruit harvest – and apples in particular. We try to spread the word about planting and caring for fruit trees and getting the best out of them. It is a relatively new celebration, growing from small beginnings at Covent Garden in 1990 to hundreds of locally organised events last year! See http://www.england-in-particular.info/cg/appleday/index.html

Maybe you have a tree in your garden and you can’t cope with all the fruit. Or you could have seen one in a neighbour’s garden, in a park or by the roadside and you know most of them will be left to rot. Let’s try not to waste any of them. Collect them yourself or bring them along on the day to share, or get in touch and we will arrange for picking and storing.

Over the next couple of months some of our volunteers will be busy making pies, muffins and chutney for the day. On the day itself we will juice apples from the orchard in Philips Park , those we have collected and any people bring along on the day. We will have apple bobbing and other children’s games and a display will feature the history of apples in our area. We hope you will be there.

If you can help us to find and harvest apples or other fruit, please get in touch with us now. You can contact us via our website

or by ringing George Heron on 0161 798 8762. Suggestions for Apple Day activities and offers of help to make it a success would also be welcome.
