Woman suffers cut to head after altercation on tram

Date published: 22 August 2011

A woman suffered a cut to her head after an altercation on a tram.

At about 10pm on Saturday 13 August 2011, the 21-year-old woman was on the Bury-bound tram between Heaton Park and Prestwich when she was approached by a man.

The man passed his mobile phone to the woman, which resulted in a argument and eventually an altercation that left the woman with a superficial cut to the left of her forehead.

The incident forced the tram to be grounded at Prestwich for 20 minutes while an ambulance and police were called.

The man retrieved his mobile phone and left at Prestwich before the police arrived, and officers are now keen to speak to him.

He is described as white but with a tanned complexion, in his 40s, with a shaved head and wearing jeans and a jacket.

Police Constable Richard Garland, from the Whitefield Neighbourhood Police team, said: "It is unclear exactly what happened to provoke this argument, but it left the woman with a cut to her head and the tram being grounded for quite a while.

"I want to appeal to any passengers who were on that tram and either witnessed what happened or have some information that will help us find this man."

Anyone with information should call police on 0161 856 8244 or the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
