Bury College Sport students support community work

Bury College Level 1 Sports students have taken part in volunteer work at local nature reserve, Chesham Woods, as part of the Green Gym project, which forms part of their qualification.

Students worked with Park Rangers to resurface new paths and make practical improvements to the woods as a way of exercising outside and helping improve their local community areas. Tackling physical jobs outdoors has also provided students with vital, practical work experience and team work skills that will be transferable onto other areas of their course.

Will Owens (16), former pupil of Bury Church said: “It has been good. I enjoyed helping out and volunteering on a project that helps the community. It has also shown me a new way of exercising outside of the gym.”

Park Ranger Ian Rogers helps manage and improve the woods for wildlife and for local people. He said: “It was great to see some of our young people actively participating in improving a local nature reserve. The effort and enthusiasm they put in in the wild weather was fantastic.”
