Ivan Lewis meets Bury College students
Date published: 03 December 2011
Bury College first year Level 3 Public Services students enjoyed a question and answer session with Ivan Lewis, MP for Bury South and Shadow Secretary of State for International Development.
As part of their Government Policies and Public Services unit, students listened to an informative speech by the MP, who gave them an insight into life in parliament and offered his thoughts on current political topics. Students then had the opportunity to ask the Mr Lewis questions they had prepared.
Georgia Taylor, age 18 and former pupil of Radcliffe Riverside School said: “The talk was really useful and it will help with my coursework because the questions asked related to the topics we’re studying. It was good to get the personal opinions of an MP.”
Students gained a greater understanding of government policies and issues that affect the whole country and their local area. Public Services tutor Martin Rowley said, “It’s great for students to have the opportunity to gain an insight into politics, working life and the options available on completion of their course.”
Following the meeting, Mr Lewis commented: “My question and answer session with students was stimulating and challenging. It once again dispelled the myth that young people are not interested in politics.”
