Bury College student unveils mural at the Rock
Date published: 15 October 2011
Congratulations to Bury College Interactive Media student, Kelly Ma (17), who unveiled her large scale mural as part of the birthday celebrations at Miller Homes at The Rock in Bury town centre.
Kelly competed against 19 entries to win the opportunity to see her design displayed at Mazarin House apartments, located above Marks & Spencer. Her design was chosen for its intricate detail and its representation of the theme “Bury then and now”.
Kelly, from Blakely and a former pupil of Plant Hill Arts College, was on hand to unveil her mural with the help of the Mayor of Bury, Councillor Yvonne Creswell.
Kelly said: “Winning this competition has shown me that if you put your mind to something you can achieve. It has been a really enjoyable experience, especially having the chance to work to a live brief. It was really interesting. It’s very surreal to see my work as a mural but it’s also a great feeling. Bury College has helped me a lot and has given me loads of new skills that I used to produce this piece of artwork.”
The unveiling ceremony was attended by the Mayor of Bury, Councillor Yvonne Creswell and the Deputy Mayor, Councillor John Byrne, who were two of the judges for the competition in July. They were joined by representatives from Miller Homes, students and staff from Bury College and residents from Mazarin House.
The Mayor was so impressed with the artwork that she has requested a print for the Mayor’s Parlour. During her closing speech the Mayor commented: “Bury is a community that produces talent and flair in all that it does. Kelly’s work is not just exciting but shows real talent and truly captures the spirit of Bury. I would also like to thank all of the other entrants from Bury College. It was extremely difficult to judge this competition and I’d like to wish them all well for the future.”
On completion of her course at Bury College, Kelly aims to pursue a Degree in Illustration.
