Learners receive the boost they need to get back into work
Date published: 15 October 2011
10 adult learners have taken their first steps to gaining employment thanks to Bury College’s fantastic new Work Skills initiative.
The Work Skills initiative is funded by the European Social Fund (ESF) and the Skills Funding Agency, and has allowed Bury College to create a range of training courses to help unemployed people gain valuable qualifications and progress into the job market.
As part of the scheme, these learners have been given the opportunity to complete a short Work Skills programme and a Hospitality and Catering course at the College. The Work Skills programme is designed to help unemployed people gain the confidence they need to do well in interviews. It covers essential skills including interview techniques, customer service, communications skills, positive thinking and advice on career progression.
To help further their skills and knowledge in the Catering industry, students have the opportunity to progress onto a course in Food Preparation at Bury College which could then lead to an Apprenticeship or NVQ Level 2.
One student who has signed up for the training is 53 year old Robert Dibb. Robert said: “Bury College is giving me a great opportunity to learn new skills and hopefully find a job in catering in the future. I’m looking forward to gaining hands-on experience in my Food Preparation Unit and would recommend Bury College to other people who are struggling to find work.”
Lynne Woods, Project Co-ordinator said: “All students have worked really hard and have come out with very positive results. By completing the work skills element, along with career related training, learners are gaining the experience and skills they need to find employment in their chosen profession.”
Carol McKenzie, Executive Director Development said: “With the funding made available to Bury College we have been able to develop specific projects aimed at people under threat of redundancy or unemployed people who are looking for work. We have also been able to develop our relationship with employers and Job Centre Plus across the borough. We are developing and delivering high quality education and training support to allow those affected by redundancy and those experiencing long term unemployment to continue in, enter or re-enter sustainable employment and contribute positively to the local labour market.”
The scheme is open to anyone who is aged 18 or over, unemployed and claiming JSA or ESA or who has made redundant or is at risk of redundancy. Training is provided free to eligible learners. Courses are available in many areas including Catering, Childcare, First Aid, Hair and Beauty, IT, Retail, Health and Social Care, Office Skills and Customer Service.
