Bury College student’s play at Stamford Bridge

Date published: 23 July 2011

Six Bury College students won a competition run by Lucozade to play in a 5-a-side tournament at Chelsea’s football ground, Stamford Bridge.

The six friends, Alex Tierney, Alistair Green, Danny Gallagher, Vaughn Aldred, Alex Egerton and Owen Sargent, had to prove they were the greatest fans of their club, Bolton Wanderers, by completing a series of challenges via facebook. The group got down to the last three competitors for Bolton Wanderers and clinched their prize thanks to over 700 votes from the public who thought their responses to the challenges were the best.

Danny Gallagher, age 18 and from Bolton, is studying A Levels in English Language, Psychology and History at Bury College. The former Little Lever School student said: “The challenges included creating a shrine for your club, which we did by filling a bedroom with Bolton Wanderers merchandise. We also had to pretend we were the club chairman for the day, which involved writing a document to propose changes we’d make. My A Level English skills helped me structure my response to this challenge.”

As part of their prize the students, who all formerly studied at Little Lever School, enjoyed an all expenses paid trip, which included staying in Chelsea’s official club hotel. Their day began with a tour of the stadium and dressing rooms at Stamford Bridge, followed by a challenging tournament against teams of fans representing Everton, Fulham, Chelsea and Aston Villa.

Finishing third in their group, the team narrowly missed out on qualification to the next stage of the competition. However, an impressive 6-0 victory over the Aston Villa fans was a moment to relish. Danny added: “The weekend was an unbelievable experience that none of us will ever forget.”
