Badminton boost for Bury pupils

Date published: 08 July 2011

Hundreds of school pupils could be tomorrow’s badminton champions thanks to a £10,000 from Sport England’s small grant programme.

The money will pay for after-school coaching and equipment in 25 local primary schools, and two family-based sessions.

Councillor Jane Lewis, executive member for leisure, tourism and culture, said: “This funding is great for our local schools. Thanks must go to the Bury Badminton Development Group and partners including Badminton England, Bury Sport and Physical Activity Service, local badminton clubs and the Bury School Sports Partnership for working together to secure this funding. This money is especially welcome in the year of the London Olympics and will enable extra curriculum opportunities for children across our primary schools.”

Judith Rasmussen, Sport England’s regional lead for the North West Region, said: “The opportunity to try a new sport for the first time is often all a person needs to catch the sporting bug. The Badminton 4 Bury Communities project is a great way for young people to try badminton and have a quality sporting experience that will encourage them to stay involved.”
