Date published: 05 December 2011
Radcliffe AC couple Ann Marie and Kevin McGilvray took to the hills and have ended up prizewinners.
In the Run The Moors Grand Prix race series Ann Marie took third place among the vet 45 women and husband Kevin was second in the vet 55 category, both receiving glass engraved plaques and a special presentation at Bamford, Rochdale on Friday night.
The fell running series, involving six clubs, ran throughout the season and competitors had to take part in at least five out of 11 races to qualify. Kevin, who had narrowly missed third place in the series last year, ran eight out of the 11 and Ann Marie ran six events. The races ranged from short fast local events to longer tougher ones in the Lake District.
More than 60 attended the evening at Bamford Bowling Club with the prizes being presented by Salford Harrier John Brown who talked about his colourful running career which has included his selection for England and Great Britain in mountain racing all over Europe.
Runners who had completed the five required races received an inscribed glass and at Radcliffe they were Kath Davies, George Critchley and Mark Murphy.
On Saturday conditions at the Red Rose Cross Country League event at Marl Pits, Rossendale, could only be described as a mudbath. Eight brave souls took on the course with Donna Cartwright coming a great sixth place out of 80 women. Next home for Radcliffe were Kath Davies (V45) and Ann Marie McGilvray with only six seconds between them.
Steve Lomax was first home among the men with Kevin McGilvray (V55) and George Critchley (V50) coming in with only seven seconds between them. Mark Murphy was next to the finish for Radcliffe followed by Mark Wolfenden.
