Top chefs to cook on Bury Market
Date published: 21 June 2010
Bury Market has teamed up with two top professional chefs from Greater Manchester for a series of cookery demonstrations at the awarding winning market.
Starfish Kitchen’s Dawn Leonard and David Gale, Executive Chef at the Manchester Hilton, will demonstrate several quick and easy recipes using leftover food. These sessions will provide a perfect compliment to any food lovers trip to the market, which stocks a wide range of local produce.
The demonstrations will take place on Saturday 3 July, Saturday 10 July and Saturday 17 July, and with Bury Adult Learning Centre on Wednesday 7 July and Wednesday 14 July.
Dawn and David will be showing Market Shoppers how they can make better use of the food they buy, to the benefit of the environment and their finances, and to raise awareness of the Greater Manchester Council’s Love Food Hate Waste Campaign.
There are many ways to make the most of the food you buy and keep your shopping bill down to a minimum – the average family can save up to £50 a month by not wasting food. Why not try several of the following tips or just try the one which appeals to you most.
Plan your meals for the week ahead – you’ll only buy what you need so there won’t be foods left in your fridge that you can’t make a meal of.
Try keeping your fruit in the fridge rather than the fruit bowl so they stay fresher for longer – up to two weeks longer!
Buy your food locally – it makes buying cheaper seasonal food easier!
Councillor Dorothy Gunther, Cabinet Member for Environment and Transport, said: “Buying locally is really important so why not make a visit to your local market, where you will not only be able to buy a vast range of fresh and locally sourced produce, but be given personal service by a stallholder who is passionate and knowledgeable about what they sell”.
“I support the Love Food Hate Waste campaign and I check the information on campaign’s web site on a regular basis – that means I can honestly say there is virtually no waste in our house, especially not food”
