Extra help for victims of domestic violence is being arranged during the World Cup

During the last tournament in 2006, there was an increase in domestic violence incidents reported to the police and also to support agencies such as Women's Aid.
With the World cup due to kick off on June 11, Team Bury – which includes Bury Council, the police and fire services, probation service and Bury NHS and many others – have put measures in place to deal with the anticipated increase in calls for help.
More police officers will be on the beat throughout the tournament, and the police domestic violence unit will have extra officers on duty.
In Bury, the Women’s Housing Action Group will be providing cover on the days of England’s first three matches: June 12 (10am-6pm), June 18 (8am-8pm) and June 23 (8am-8pm). They can be called on 0161 764 5066.
If victims need emotional support after these hours, they are advised to call the National Domestic Violence Helpline on 0808 247 2000.
There is also a Greater Manchester website - endthefear.co.uk - designed for the World Cup and domestic violence/abuse.
But in an emergency, always call 999.
Jaria Hussain-Lala, Bury Council’s domestic violence strategy co-ordinator, said that incidents increase when England play, often fuelled by alcohol.
She added: “Domestic violence takes place not only in the home but also in the workplace and within communities. All forms of domestic violence are unacceptable, and we all have a part to play in addressing this social issue.
“In this World Cup campaign the message is very clear – we are encouraging victims to seek support, and insist that perpetrators change their behaviour or face the consequences.”
