Communities against cancer searches for local champions

Date published: 08 May 2010

Volunteers in Bury have helped to increase the number of people being treated early for cancer. They have worked with local people to increase awareness of early symptoms and signs. But this will only continue with more volunteers.

NHS Bury is seeking volunteers to promote ‘Communities Against Cancer’, a community based project which aims to increase the number of people accessing screening and raise awareness of the early signs and symptoms of breast, bowel and lung cancer amongst local communities. By accessing screening and being more aware, this will lead to people being diagnosed earlier and improve their chances of survival.

Sarah Berne, Project Manager for Communities Against Cancer said: “We have had some good feedback from our dedicated volunteers about how this project has had a really positive effect on them, giving them an opportunity to invest their time and efforts into the local community, and positively contribute to health in Bury.”

“The project has been progressing well, but we really need more volunteers to keep that momentum going and to expand the project further. We couldn’t have got to where we are without the dedication of our volunteers, they make it happen and add huge value to the project.”

Volunteers don’t need to have experience of volunteering or have personal experience of cancer. They will receive a full training package to help them make the maximum impact in a sensitive manner.

Once recruited, volunteers can get involved in a number of ways, no matter how much or little time they have to spare.

Anyone who would like more information about becoming a volunteer for the Communities Against Cancer Project can call Sarah Berne on tel: 0161 272 4067.
