Free course will help adults lose weight, and keep it off!
Date published: 12 February 2010
The key to shedding those extra pounds and keeping them off the healthy way are being shared through a free course.
Community Services Bury’s Health Trainers are offering the course to people aged over 18 who live in Bury or have a Bury GP.
Many weight loss diets promise to help people lose weight quickly. Often, these diets focus on short-term results and don’t work in the long term. They may also be bad for people’s health.
The only way to lose weight healthily and keep it off is to make permanent changes to the way we eat and exercise. These don’t have to be big changes. A few small alterations can help us to achieve a healthy weight, and there are plenty of ways to make physical activity part of everyday life.
Maintaining a healthy weight is a crucial part of overall good health. By keeping weight within a healthy range people not only feel better, but this also lowers their risk of heart disease, stroke and some cancers.
Dr. Peter Elton, Director of Public Health for NHS Bury said: “Losing weight helps people feel better. The Health Trainers offer a service that helps people lose weight and then keep to a healthy weight. I would highly recommend the Health Trainers to everyone who wants to lose weight permanently, rather than letting their weight yo-yo.”
The course, delivered by specially trained tutors, is run over six weeks, during the evening (from 6pm), with each session lasting around 90 minutes. Run in a local community venue, the ‘healthy weight management course’ is designed to be informal and fun and will offer participants both group support and individual help to set and achieve personal goals.
The first course starts later this month (from 25 February). Places are limited and can be reserved by calling 0845 071 0699. People can also call this number to register an interest for a future course.
