A Bury Safe Place to Shop

Reporter: Ask Bury
Date online: 20 February 2008

Recent figures from Greater Manchester Police show that crime in the town centre has dropped by 33% in the past year. It' also good news for night owls as the crime has dropped by 24% during the same period.

Market traders are keeping their fingers crossed that the current trend is here to stay as not one single purse theft has been reported in the past 21 days. This is hot on the heels of a reduction in 'theft from person' offences this Christmas.

The Crime Prevention Trailer will be on the Bury's World Famous Market between 29 February 2008 and 29 March 2008, next to the subway on Bury Market's Golden Mile.  Visitors are encouraged to pop in and find out how they can make themselves safe when out and about.

Bury has a good reputation throughout Greater Manchester for having one of the lowest for crime rates across the region.  Councillor Michelle Wiseman Executive Member for Safe, Strong and Confident Communities said: "Just because we've got a low crime rate doesn't mean we can rest there, Burysafe needs to keep the momentum going and let thieves who come into the town know that they are not welcome. Bury Market is a safe environment in which to shop and attracts shoppers and tourists from far and wide.  We offer a shopping experience of a lifetime and millions of people put a visit here on their shopping list".
