Work is scheduled to start in September on a new pound;369k extension to Whitefield library funded by the Learning and Skills Council.
The extension to the side of the building will house a large dual use classroom enabling pottery, art and other educational classes, which had previously been accommodated at the Whitefield Centre and a new building within the inner quadrangle will form another classroom.
The existing Sensory Support Unit room will also be developed to enable a continuation of existing services, alongside further adult education courses catering for students living with a disability. The existing homework room will become an IT suite that will continue to be used by library customers and also by adult education learners. Access to and within the building will all be at ground level with full physical access throughout.
The extension will provide improved physical access and reach out to new learners who will benefit from support in developing their basic skills.
Some additional classes are also being delivered by the Adult Learning Service at community venues in Whitefield.
Diana Sorrigan, the new Head of Libraries and Adult Learning said: quot;At first the application for funding seemed unlikely to be successful but we are delighted that our hopes and dreams for Whitefield are going to be realised. We hope that it will encourage more people to use the library and provide a bigger focal point for learning and education in the community".
Councillor Sharon Briggs Executive Member for Learning Skills and Employment said: quot;By housing the library and education facilities under one roof we feel that the council is providing a more efficient resource. This project will have significant benefit for the local community who want to extend their skills and knowledge in order to enhance their prospects."
John Rawsthorne, Area Director Greater Manchester North at the Learning and Skills Council said: quot; The LSC is delighted to fund this building project along with others at The Haymarket, Prestwich and Ramsbottom. By providing high quality learning environments these developments will benefit adults, who wish to enhance their skills, across Bury."
