Date online: 05 October 2006

Three Bury workers have secured their places at this year Star Award finals in the outstanding support team category and will travel to London for the grand ceremony at the end of the month.

Each year the Quality Improvement Agency gives out its star awards for people making a difference in the field of learning and skills education. This year the entire Northern short listed finalists from as far a field as Newcastle and Liverpool were invited to Doncaster College on September 29 to celebrate their nominations prior to the final.

Bury has a good previous track record in this area from 2003/4  when Paul Warde and Julie Brick from the Widening Participation section of the Adult Education Service were nominated and also reached the finals.

This year Julie Kenrick, Assistant Head of Libraries and Adult Learning with special responsibility for Skills for Life and Community Learning put forward the names of Sue Scott, Paul Fulton and Debbie Giladi who work out in the community developing education and training opportunities for people who are homeless or vulnerably accommodated.

The work is jointly funded by the Homelessness Revenue Grant through the Strategic Housing Unit and Bury Adult Learning Service and the funding it receives from the Learning and Skills Council.

Councillor Sharon Briggs of Learning, Skills and Employment said "This is a wonderful achievement for Bury once again reaching the finals and putting Bury on the map nationally. The dedication and hard work of everyone involved deserves the recognition and support to continue their valued work within the community that really does make a difference."
