Police in Bury are appealing for witnesses following an aggravated burglary on the night of Monday 6 November 2006.

At around 11pm, a 21-year-old man returned home to his house in Silverdale Close and was confronted by a man brandishing a hammer or spanner and coming down the stairs.

The victim began to struggle with the burglar and the pair spilled onto the front lawn outside. During the ensuing struggle, the victim was hit in the face with the metal tool and lost a tooth. The offender also lost a pair of glasses, a white Reebok trainer and a two-way radio in the struggle.

A man who witnessed the struggle then stepped in and helped to detain the offender. While waiting for police to arrive, a woman pulled up in a Mitsubishi Shogun-type jeep and suggested they put the offender on the back seat while they wait for officers to arrive. He got on and she sped off.

The victim suffered facial injuries in the incident and was taken to Fairfield hospital for treatment.

The burglar is described as a white man, aged around 28, between 5ft 9in and 6ft tall, with a stocky build, fair but thinning hair and wearing a dark tracksuit top with white stripes down the sleeves. The woman driver is described as white, also around 28-years-old, with a petite build, blond highlighted hair tied in a ponytail and wearing dark rimmed glasses and a white jacket. It is believed the vehicle involved is a dark Mitsubishi Shogun-type jeep with a J-registration plate.

Anyone who witnessed the incident, or who knows the whereabouts of the jeep, is asked to phone Bury burglary unit on 0161 856 8093 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
