Bury Council will host an invitation only Holocaust Memorial Day Service on Thursday January 25 at 7pm at The Elizabethan Suite, Bury Town Hall.
The event marks the 62nd anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz and will be attended by the Mayor, faith and political leaders, community representatives and members of the public. Young people from all the secondary schools in the borough will be involved in the service through music, dance and spoken word.
The theme for Holocaust Memorial Day 2007 is "The Dignity of Difference’, which provides a focus for people to think about the continuing implications of racism and intolerance that are manifest in society today.
The Day’s purpose is to commemorate all victims of Nazi persecution and to show that the events of the Holocaust remain relevant to everyone in the UK. In 2006, 16 countries will mark HMD across Europe, including Germany, Italy and France.
Councillor Wayne Campbell, Leader of the Council said: "We are looking forward to seeing our local community, young and old, coming together to remember the atrocities of the Holocaust. Bury is one of the foremost authorities in Greater Manchester in the commemoration of the Holocaust and because of the strength of our feeling, we want to stand together against exclusion and persecution. The theme "The Dignity of Difference’ is instrumental in helping us to remember those whose lives were lost or irrevocably altered during this time, and how issues such as inclusion and exclusion still have a profound effect on our society today."
