Can you help put the smile back on the faces of the youngsters at Fairfield General?

A flood on the Children’s Ward at Bury’s Fairfield General Hospital has left the young patients with very few toys to keep them occupied while in hospital.

The flood happened on Thursday 22nd March when a pipe burst in the play room where all the ward’s toys and play equipment were stored, causing thousands of pounds worth of damage.

Equipment ranged from a television, DVD player and dvds, and games consoles, to specialist equipment for children with complex needs.

Ann-Marie Smith, divisional nurse manager for children’s, said: "Play is an integral part a child’s recovery and it is essential that the appropriate toys for the child’s age and stage of development are readily available.

"The equipment and stock had been built up over a number of years. Some of the toys and equipment was very kindly donated by parents, carers and in some instances children themselves.

"We’ve already had donations coming in which we’re really grateful for. Anyone from local people to local business who can help in someway or would like to donate should contact 01706 51 7840."

The types of items the ward is looking for, if possible, are: prams, ride-on cars, baby toys, bricks and Lego, art equipment, dolls and board games.

While the unit appreciates any support, it is requesting only new equipment/toys are donated due to the risk of cross infection and other safety issues. Because of the difficulties in keeping them clean, donations of cuddly toys cannot be accepted.
