Cannabis farm found underground

Date published: 10 February 2012

An underground cannabis farm, within the foundations of a house, has been discovered in Whitefield.

The farm was discovered by officers from the Prestwich and Whitefield Neighbourhood Policing Team on Wednesday 9 February as part of Operation Shock, an ongoing operation to clampdown on drugs in the area.

Police recovered around 200 seedlings and 200 mature plants that were accessed through a tiny makeshift trapdoor within the house on Dales Lane.

Inspector Mark Kenny of the Prestwich and Whitefield Neighbourhood Policing Team said: “I am delighted with the outcome of this operation, which has prevented a large amount of cannabis from reaching the streets of Whitefield. This was a sophisticated drug producing operation in a very unusual location, and I am delighted to close it down. In my many years service I have not come across one sited in such a place.

“I would like to thank the communities of Whitefield for their continued support as we tackle this important issue. We will continue to listen to your concerns and act on any information you give to us.”

A second cannabis farm was found containing approximately 100 plants on Nipper Lane Whitefield on Tuesday 8 February.

Instead of producing cannabis in clandestine and often very unhealthy conditions, as is encouraged by prohibition, we need to be moving towards a more honest and open system of regulation. People will look back on this era of Cannabis prohibition much as we now look back and see how stupid alcohol prohibition was.

The cannabis laws are an embarrassment to anyone who uses reason and logic to formulate laws (which they dont). Prohibition DOESNT work.

- The prestige of government has undoubtedly been lowered considerably by the prohibition law. For nothing is more destructive of respect for the government and the law of the land than passing laws which cannot be enforced. It is an open secret that the dangerous increase of crime in this country is closely connected with this.

Instead of producing cannabis in clandestine and often very unhealthy conditions, as is encouraged by prohibition, we need to be moving towards a more honest and open system of regulation as suggested by Sir Richard Branson. Currently youngsters are easy prey for the villains who were given the entire market by prohibition. We need to protect the youth with a properly regulated supply with age controls, ID checks etc. Legalise regulate and tax for a happier brighter future.
