Two-way traffic returns to Knowsley Street
Date published: 07 February 2012
A busy road in Bury town centre is to be fully re-opened to traffic going both ways following public consultation.
Knowsley Street, which connects the Interchange to Manchester Road, was made No Entry to traffic going south in July 2011 as an experimental scheme.
The six-month trial has now ended, and the council received 30 letters/emails of objection, including two petitions.
Council leader Mike Connolly has now accepted a recommendation from traffic officers that the road will revert to its two-way status.
Cllr Connolly said: “The one-way trial was introduced on the grounds that it would create a more pedestrian-friendly space between the town hall and the new Knowsley Place and Union Square.
“However, having listened to comments from the public, we have decided that the advantages of having two-way traffic on Knowsley Street outweigh the disadvantages. I’m sure many people will welcome this decision, which is another example of how this council is listening to residents and acting on their concerns.”
The road will become two-way in around a month’s time once the necessary paperwork is completed and signs altered.
