Date published: 05 February 2012
Bury College student Alex Ahmed has been offered a sponsored place by Ernst & Young, on a BSc (Hons) in Accounting, Auditing and Finance at Lancaster University having completed a competitive assessment process.
Alex was one of eight successful students from 120 who attended a selection workshop in London to be chosen for the opportunity. This prestigious course receives over 1,000 applicants per year, with only 40 gaining places. Alex excelled in a series of demanding tests including psychometric testing, group and individual interviews, a presentation and numeracy tests, and was overjoyed to be offered a place on the course. He said, “I am so happy to have this great opportunity. I received lots of support from staff at Bury College, which helped me get through each stage of the admissions process and assisted me in differentiating myself from the other candidates.”
Alex is currently studying A Level Economics, Business and English Language at Bury College. Speaking about his time at the College, Alex said, “The support has been great, even outside of College hours. You just have to ask for help and the staff are willing to help at any time.”
The four year sandwich degree will give Alex the skills he needs to become a professional accountant. On successful completion of the course Alex will have seven out of the 10 ICAS chartered accountant qualifications required by the industry and will have gained 18 months’ work experience.
Principal and Chief Executive of Bury College, Lauran Chatburn CBE was delighted with Alex’s achievement. Lauran said, “We are so proud of Alex’s success. He has competed against students from all over the country including private school sixth forms. This achievement demonstrates that Bury College students are up there with the best nationally!”
