Get fit the ‘age of opportunities’ way

If you haven’t done any exercise recently, are over 50 and live in Bury, the Age of Opportunities programme managed by Bury Council could get you started on the road to a happier, healthier you.
Age of Opportunities is an exciting new programme focusing on the promotion of health and wellbeing for the people of Bury aged 50 and over. Funded through this programme, Bury Leisure is offering free swimming lessons, free swimming sessions and discounted get active taster sessions.
Councillor Beverly Sullivan, Executive Member, Health and Wellbeing said ldquo;Keeping physically active not only improves health and quality of life it can also help people live longer, and the good thing is, it’s never too late to start.”
Neil Long, Assistant Director, Leisure Services said ldquo;At Bury Leisure we want to encourage people to spend more time enjoying active interests and we will help people who come to us through this programme to start exercising gently and build-up gradually towards achieving the recommended thirty minutes of moderate exercise, three times a week.”
Details of activities on offer:
50+ FREE swimming lessons
A free course of five, one hour swimming lessons is being offered to people who can’t swim or those who haven’t swum in a long time and need to re-build their water confidence. The lessons will take place in small groups over 5 consecutive weeks and must be booked in advance at the appropriate centre.

Free swimming sessions are being offered to people who can swim and want to re-build their water confidence and fitness level.

Thursday 2 pm to 3.30 pm, 6 pm to 7 pm or 7.45 pm to 8.45 pm
Friday 6 pm to 7 pm.

50+ Get Active Taster Sessions For only pound;1 per session people over 50 wanting to try out different activities for the first time or thinking of returning to regular exercise after a long break, can join in with informal and friendly taster sessions. Activities will vary from week-to-week but are likely to include exercise to music, short tennis, table tennis, badminton, walking, jogging, short mat bowls, team games and squash. Just turn up and pay at reception.
