Lane Closure on Bolton Road (Bury Bridge), Starts 15 th October.

Reporter: Ask Bury
Date online: 13 October 2007

National Grid have informed the Council of a gas leak on Bury Bridge, Bury.  Currently they are venting the gas through holes excavated in the central reservation opposite Millet Street.

However they will need to do further works in order to locate the exact position of the failed pipe.  Initially this will involve taking lane 3 (outside lane) of the Bury bound carriageway, off-peak (9.30 - 3.00), to carry out rock-drilling to locate the leak.  This will commence on either Monday or Tuesday next week.

Once the position of the damaged main is located it will be necessary to excavate down to the pipe to undertake the necessary repairs.  This will require the same lane 3 to be closed for the duration of the excavation due to the depth of excavation.  For safety reasons even if the damaged pipe is in the central reservation it will be necessary to still close lane 3 due to the position of the main.  This will result in delays for Bury bound traffic travelling from the Ramsbottom, Tottington and Bolton directions, especially during the morning peak period.

National Grid are reasonably confident that they will find the leak either on the edge of the central reservation or in lane 3 and therefore it is not anticipated at this stage that there will be any impact on outbound traffic.

National Grid through their own office will be notifying the media of the works and potential disruption to traffic.
