Body MOT's for Boys at Football Matches

Reporter: Ask Bury
Date online: 06 March 2008

A health program to target men aged between 16 - 24 and 50+ will be launched at Bury Football Club on 19th March 12.45pm - 3pm.

MOT style checks will be carried out on match days at Bury FC and FC United and those who want to get involved will get the chance to learn more about their BMI and blood pressure.

From these checks they will be signposted onto other PCT services or onto the Health Kick Programme.

The Health Kick programme will last six weeks and men who have had their MOT's will get invited down to learn more about healthy eating, sexual health, the effect of alcohol and drugs on the body and get the chance to evaluate their life and set goals for the future. On the practical side of the course they will get the chance to participate in fun football activities, run by qualified coaches from Bury FC, stadium tours and health walks. They will also get the chance to gain recognised qualifications in health, football and leadership.

Councillor Beverley Sullivan Executive Member for Health and Wellbeing said: "The programme will give local men the chance to be given a quick once over to ensure that they are as fit as their football superheroes without the inconvenience of going to their local doctor's surgery. It's a fantastic idea."

Activities on the day will include: Football activities eg penalty shoot out and small sided games.  There will be a juice bar/smoothie stand to promote healthy eating. The healthy trainers will have a stand promoting their services and there will be MOT's being carried out on anyone who wants one.

The Launch is to get the message out into the wider community about Health Kick and the benefits it can have on individuals and local communities.

The health kick project has been borne from a close partnership between Bury Sport Development, Bury PCT, Bury FC and other local football clubs.
