Baby found dead in garden

Date published: 07 September 2010

Police are appealing for information after a baby was left wrapped in a cloth in a Bury garden.

The owner of a house on Tinline Street, Bury found the baby around 11.15am on Monday (6 September 2010).

Police went to the house and found the child wrapped in a cloth in the corner of a garden.

Paramedics from the ambulance service confirmed the baby had died.

A Home Office Post Mortem examination will take place this morning to try and establish the cause of the newborn baby's death.

Detectives investigating are now trying to trace the mother of the child.

Detective Superintendent Sam Haworth of GMP's Major Incident Team said: "There are obvious health concerns with the mother and we want to make sure she is safe.

"We also need to know why the baby was left there. There are a number of assumptions we could make, but we need to know the truth.

"We are checking CCTV in the area to try and find out who left the baby but I would ask people to think carefully about your friends and family.

"If you know of any women or girls who were pregnant and due to give birth in the last week and had been acting strangely, or if the news of the baby being found dead is seriously affecting someone you know then please call us."

Anyone with information should call police on 0161 856 2481 or call the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
