Free chance to discover borough's heritage
Date published: 03 September 2010
A once-a-year chance to discover hidden treasures and local history and traditions takes place next month.
Bury’s Tourist Information Centre is getting ready to celebrate this year’s Heritage Open Days which run from September 9 to 12.
Co-ordinated nationally by English Heritage , the event celebrates England's history and architecture, offering free admission and guided tours to many of the borough’s historic buildings and museums.
This year’s programme includes a look behind the scenes and a ride on the East Lancashire Railway, tours of the newly opened Bury Transport Museum and a guided walk and tour of the Fusiliers Museum.
Many local churches will be offering tours, and the area’s most famous landmark Peel Tower will be open on Sunday (Sep 12) for those wishing to take in views from the top. Events are free of charge but expected to be very popular, so booking is advised.
