Diggle Lane nominated for prestigious award

Date published: 03 September 2010

Diggle Lane Allotment Association has been nominated for a prestigious award from the Manchester Food and Drink Festival Committee.

And this is where local residents come in - the award is given to the group that receives the most public votes via the website www.foodanddrinkfestival.com

The award is given to select community groups by the Greater Manchester Community Foundation as the Forever Manchester "Foodie" Award.

Over the past 12 months the association has developed the allotment site with the aim of involving the local community and its associated groups to encourage the growing of anything that provides good healthy eating.

The allotments now contain a large undercover area devoted to fast-growing crops, particularly salads and herbs which are given free to anyone who wants them. Such is the demand that more covered community areas are being considered for 2011.

Associated groups are youth and children's centres, local churches are involved, and local restaurants who value fresh local produce are also interested.

Families who have plots often find that growing herbs and salads outdoors is challenging, so using indoor areas where getting from seed to table only takes a few weeks is popular.

The association says that the freshness and quality of the food is unbeatable, thanks to its dedicated volunteers, and the project has surpassed expectations.
