Take the First Steps to a new life

Date published: 04 September 2010

A hair and beauty course to help people learn skills and maybe get a job is being run by Bury adult learning service.

The First Steps course, provided by the community learning team, takes place at Broad Oak Sports College on six Friday mornings, starting on September 10.

It follows the success of the first hair and beauty course, also held at the Broad Oak salon during the summer term. One of the learners who took part said: “Enjoyed the course very much. The group was very friendly, and the tutor was just perfect."

Julie Brick, First Steps programme manager, said: “There are no exams, so don’t let that put you off! The idea is to give people a flavour of life in the hair and beauty industry, and they might then decide to follow that as a career, perhaps by applying to colleges and salons to see what they have to offer.”

First Steps courses are designed to build up skills and confidence to go into education or employment. They are free to people without a full Level 2 qualification and are in receipt of certain benefits.

The sessions run from 9.30am to noon. To book a place on the course, call Bury Adult Learning Centre on 0161 253 5772, or the community learning team on 0161 253 7459.
