Record GCSE results for Bury students

Date published: 24 August 2010

Students in Bury go from strength to strength after they chalked up another year of record-breaking GCSE results.

The percentage of young people achieving five A*-C grade passes has increased by five per cent, from 75 per cent in 2009 – itself a record - to 80 per cent this year. This compares to the national average of 69 per cent.

And those who got five A*-Cs (including English and maths) has gone up from 59 per cent to 62 per cent.

Councillor Robert Caserta, cabinet member for children and young people, said: “I am delighted with these results. Bury really does go from strength to strength in providing the best education opportunities for children to allow them to have a bright future.

“These excellent results are down to the continued hard work and dedication of pupils, teachers and support staff, along with the valued support of parents and governors.”

Eleni Ioannides, executive director of children’s services, added: “Once again Bury’s schools and pupils have surpassed our expectations. Based on our schools’ intakes, every school is in the top quarter nationally for getting five A*-Cs.

“These results are truly outstanding and are likely to keep Bury as one of the highest performing authorities in the country.”
