Don't waste it, cook it!

Date published: 27 July 2010

Top professional chefs from Manchester came to Bury Market to show shoppers how to Love Food, Hate Waste.

Dawn Leonard from Starfish Kitchen and David Gale, executive chef at the Manchester Hilton, demonstrated several quick and easy recipes using leftover food.

People were asked to sign up to the Greater Manchester-wide Love Food Hate Waste campaign, and received a gift to help them. Gifts included pasta measures, measuring cups and seals for food bags. Recipe cards were also handed out to help visitors replicate the tasty dishes.

The chefs were on Bury Market several days in July, as were tutor chefs from Bury Council’s adult learning service, and the waste management service.

Their efforts certainly did the trick - more than 200 people signed up to the campaign on the first day alone.

Councillor Dorothy Gunther, cabinet member for environment and transport, said: “If there’s one thing I can’t abide, it’s waste, and it’s terrible that we all throw away so much food each year. My thanks go to all the chefs who came to our great Bury Market to show us how we can help the environment and save money at the same time.”
