Date published: 27/07/2010

Haydn Griffith from Bury has been re-appointed by the Appointments Commission as Non-executive Director of The Pennine Acute Hospitals NHS Trust for a further four years.

The Pennine Acute Hospitals NHS Trust is one of the largest NHS Trusts in the country. It runs Fairfield General Hospital in Bury, North Manchester General Hospital, The Royal Oldham Hospital, Rochdale Infirmary and services at Birch Hill Hospital.

Mr Griffith was appointed a Non-executive Director in 2006. He spent most of his career with the Cooperative Insurance Society, where he became a member of the executive team. He was later appointed a member of the Executive of the newly formed Cooperative Financial Services.

His new Term of Office at the Trust starts on 1 October 2010 and runs to 30 September 2014 and will receive a remuneration of £6,096 per annum which is the current rate of remuneration for non-executives of NHS Trusts.

Mr Griffith is one of six local Non-executive Directors who sit on the Board of the Pennine Acute NHS Hospitals Trust which meets monthly.

John Jesky, Chairman of The Pennine Acute Hospitals NHS Trust, said: "The Board of every NHS Trust must have a majority of Non-executive Directors. These are important public appointments made whenever possible from the local communities served by the organisation, helping the Board to work in the public interest and using their specialist knowledge to add to the effectiveness of the Board discussions.

“On behalf of the Board I am delighted to welcome Haydn as a Non-executive Director of the Trust for a further four years. His wealth of knowledge, corporate experience and commitment to the Trust over the past four years has been invaluable and will continue to provide an excellent asset to our non-executive team.

“The Trust has an exciting future ahead with plans for new developments and improvements to our hospitals. The Board’s priorities are to continue to ensure our services are safe, high quality and sustainable, and to further reduce healthcare acquired infections and our hospital mortality rate.“

Commenting on his re-appointment, Mr Griffith said: "I am delighted to be continuing my role as Non-executive Director at the Pennine Acute Trust. The Trust and the NHS as a whole is facing challenging times ahead. We must ensure we can continue to deliver high quality services that are safe and meet the needs of patients and their families whilst bearing in mind the current financial constraints facing public services. As a Trust we have made good progress over the last few years in terms of key capital developments and quality of care. We have some challenging plans ahead and I look forward to playing a key role in these which will enhance the important services provided by the Trust across all its hospitals.”

The re-appointment of Mr Griffith has been made in accordance with the Commissioner for Public Appointments Code of Practice.

All non-executive appointments are made on merit and political activity plays no part in the selection process. However, in accordance with the original Nolan recommendations, there is a requirement for appointees political activity (if any declared) to be made public. Mr Griffith has not declared any political activity and does not hold any other ministerial appointments.

The Trust has a total annual operating budget of over £560m. It employs around 10,000 staff and serves a population of approximately 800,000 people.

The Trust is a strongly performing Trust. In the 2008/9 Care Quality Commission report, the Trust received “good” for the quality of its care and “good” for financial management and the Trust has been registered with no conditions under the new registration scheme.
