Plans to reopen controversial ginnel
Date published: 26/07/2010
A passageway between Argyle Avenue and Westminister Avenue on the Victoria estate was closed eight years ago when it became a magnet for anti-social behaviour and drug taking. Residents living closest to the ginnel are now angry about plans to reopen it which they claim is dangerous.
However, following a request from some residents social landlords Six Town Housing are balloting the entire estate over whether or not to reopen the ginnel.
Six Town Housing has begun balloting the estate, but the final decision will be left to Bury Council’s community safety unit.
A spokesman for Six Town Housing said: "A Six Town Housing spokesman said: "The ginnel next to Argyle Avenue and Westminster Avenue was recently cleared of rubbish by Six Town Housing and local residents.
"Following that operation, Six Town received queries from tenants about whether the gates should be left permanently open or closed. We decided that it would make sense to get the views of residents living on the estate, so we have sent them a ballot slip asking whether they want the gates open or closed.
"However, there are concerns about legal issues and rights of way. Therefore this matter is to be subject of a review to ensure that there are no breaches of legislation".
