Radcliffe Athletic Club weekly report

Radcliffe AC women are showing their form again with top placings and a team prize.
Fifteen members took part in the Joan Rhodes and Fred Norris 5K trail race from the Masons Arms, Sion Street, Radcliffe, looping around the Outwood Trail and it was the ladies who took pride of place scooping the team prize with Donna Cartwright first woman in 20m 18secs, Rachael Ellison second in 21m 37secs and Sheila Jones fourth in 24m.13secs as well as being first vet 55. Rita Kavanagh, and Denise Kay were also first in their age categories and there were fine runs from Melanie Ridgewell, Louise Macdonald and Wendy Fairhurst.

The men were well represented with Rob Shiels coming in seventh overall in 17m 48secs, followed by Mark Emmett second vet 50 in 20m 3secs, George Critchley third vet 50 in 21m 31secs and Chris Burrows, Berin Jones, David Bartlett and Iain (correct) Harris all finishing strongly.

In the Horwich 5 mile road race, a two lap, undulating course around the Rivington area two women took top places in their age groups, Jones, first vet 55 in 42m 16secs and Eileen Royle first vet 60 in 42m 25 secs.The race was part of the Central Lancs Grand Prix League and also a Radcliffe club championship race.

On a hot humid evening when the race just finished before a tremendous thunderstorm 11 members ran with first home among the Radcliffe runners being Shiels again in 26th placeoverall in 31m 24secs, followed by Mark Emmett ( V50) clocking 35m 53secs, George Critchley (V50) 38m 18secs, John Kirkham second vet 60 38m 51secs, Mark Murphy 39m 47secs, Chris Burrows (V4) 40m 01secs, Berrin Jones (V40) 40m 44secs, Melanie Ridgewell 45m 3secs, and Denise Kay (V40) 46m 31secs.

And in the Turnslack Fell Race at Littleborough it was Rachael Ellison who took the honours among the women with a fine third place on a tough eight mile course in 1hr 36m 54secs. Two minutes ahead was Kevin McGilvray in 1hr 34m 44 secs and Mark Murphy ran 1hr 52secs. The event, which took in 2,000 feet of climbing, was part of the Run The Moors series, organised by five local clubs including Radcliffe.
