Tameside MEP calls for change as 300th British death in Afghanistan predicted
Date published: 21 June 2010
With predictions that a 300th British serviceman will shortly be killed in Afghanistan, deputy prime minister Nick Clegg is being urged by a Tameside Liberal Democrat MEP to back the withdrawal of troops from the country.
Chris Davies says that the British presence is doing nothing to keep the streets of Britain safer.
He argues that an accommodation must be found with the Taliban, and that in the meantime British soldiers are being killed by people who will one day be part of the Afghan government.
Davies writes: "One reason why 77% of people in this country tell pollsters that they want our troops out of Afghanistan is because they either do not know what are the objectives for their presence or do not believe that these can be achieved. I share these doubts."
